Aaron Says: Be My Girlfriend
As I sit here in my office listening to stabbing westward and looking at the extreme lack of female impression around my apartment, I started to think about what I really want in a future girlfriend. Every goal oriented book and success based study talks about writing out your goals. The thought is that you may not achieve or even have an understanding of your goals if you don't fully define them first. So, with that in mind, let me think about what I need in a girl and list them out. This list is not in order of importance, however.
Laughter is King I enjoy making people laugh and I'd like to think I can be fun to be around. I also enjoy people making me laugh and wish for that in my future girl. I'm talking about a real laughter, a connection, even a goony-ness, if you will - not that fake laughter that some girls do when they like a guy - to patronize them almost. Laughter is very important.
Knows a little bit about Technology While I don't need her to be anything even near as nerdy as I, she should be fluent enough to at least send e-mail, possibly IM, understand how her phone works to a point, and find some joy in some technology stuff. Lets face it, thats what my job and hobbies revovle around - she would be completely bored (and thats not what I want...) if she didn't have some understanding of technology.
Can cook better than I While this isn't a necessity, I'd love to find a girl who has cooking skills. I don't want her free time to be a slave to cooking, but I do enjoy a home cooked meal. I'd also like it if she could teach me how to cook better - I'd love to spend some time in the kitchen with her learning the techniques.
Wide range of entertainment I'd like if she was into ballet and rock clubs, biking and movie watching, indoor and outdoor, fast paced and quiet. Basically, I'd like to expand my realm of things I do with different activities - and part of having a significant other is not having to discover things alone. I'd like her to be just as happy sitting on my couch with me watching a new movie as biking through the forest by my house (which oddly enough has random pvc piping coming out of the ground... so maybe thats not such a good idea anymore...).
Intelligent - common sense I don't want a dumb girl. I don't want to have to teach her little things. I don't mind knowing a specific set of things better, but thats in exchange for her knowing other things more than I. If I know writing and math, she might know art and music... etc. I also need her to have common sense - nothing is more irritating to me than a 'fake' damsel in distress. I also don't want to be worried about her if she's doing something on her own.
Size does matter to a point... I'd just like her to be smaller than me... which isn't hard. I'm just not a fan of the amazon super tall women or the extremely football player built ones. Great people I know, but I'm really not attracted to that.
Life Experience Its not necessary to have a lot of life experience, but it would be a plus. Experiences make great stories and also help round out a person's thoughts and ideas. My biggest fear is ending up with a girl who hasn't experienced but one lifestyle and can't understand, cope or adapt with different ones. I don't know where my future yet lies - and it would be helpful to have someone around who has other experiences than my own to help me understand and temper other situations.
Musically Inclined This is not a necessity - however, it is a cool thing. It would be nice if she played an instrument or sang or something - as music is very important to me. However, still a nice to have.
Religion and Belief system I've honestly not nailed this part of my life down. I do believe in Jesus, God, etc. I consider myself a christian - but that can be such a vague thing. I don't have a specific requirement for her religion as I haven't even decided myself what I completely believe. One thing I can't stand is a closed mind on other people's beliefs and religions. Where as I might think a catholic faith is ill-based, I'm not going to call them names or humiliate that person for being part of that religion. Same thing with baptists: I might not be into that much of a show... but there is no need to put them down. So, I need her to either be on her own path or to have found her path... but be willing and open to basically "love" other human beings (which wouldn't you say is the paramount belief of a good portion of religions anyway?)
No Smoking I'm sorry but thats just not gonna fly. I support people's decision to smoke when it doesn't come into my breathing area... but I hate the smell on people's clothing. Its just not something I want to be around.
Confidence While lately I've found a lot of super-strong girls who I think are covering something up (hey - you did good... "Oh don't be such a softie" Sorry for the compliment then, jeez.), I would still like the girl to have some confidence. She doesn't need to be a wild out girl, but I shouldn't need to tell her 5x a day that she's worthwhile. I want her to know she's lucky to be with me and I'm lucky to be with her. I plan to encourage her and support her, but I don't want her world to end if a day goes past and I don't.
Encouraging Its been said that behind every good man is a great woman. I believe this - but I think people don't realize entirely what that means. I think some of the greatest men in the world have been able to come back to their girl and she's been able to tell him 'yes you're doing great'. If your guy is a decent human being, he's going to appreciate and feed off of that. I would love to find a girl who has an encouraging nature and who can help remind me to do good in life.
Thats about all for now. I know how life changes you and things that were important before aren't always as important anymore. I'm up for my list to change - and I know it will. I also know its not the end-all-be-all... sometimes you can't find everything you want, nor should you. Sometimes what we want isn't whats best for us. But at least I wrote it down for now :)
