So I decided to get involved with BBBS (Big Brothers/Big Sisters). It was suggested when I lived in Central WI - but I knew I'd be moving. Now that I'm in Milwaukee metro, I think its time to get involved.
The first thing I did was e-mail someone from Craigslist who was talking about BBBS volunteering. They sent me some additional information and suggested I read it and let them know if I want to continue.
I wrote back saying I would like that - so we set up a phone Interview. Basically that was just telling me about the program more and asking if I had any questions. Since I had none, they set up an in-person interview.
I went downtown for the interview. Was a litlte bit early. Met the person I was talking to on the phone. Then, finally, a different lady came out to begin the interview.
Once again, I got an overview of the process. Then, they asked specific questions about me. What do I do for work, what about fun. Why do I want to get involved? Tell me about your family life growing up, what do you do to resolve conflicts with friends.
The entire time I actually had fun - my interviewer was a lot of fun and we had a lot of laughs. However, the entire time, she continued to type down notes. I made maybe an 'unacceptable' joke at one time, though. She asked how I resolve conflicts with my friends. I joked and said we threw knives at each other (my roommate just got into knife throwing). Oh well - I thought it was just a joke.
The one question that was asked completely caught me off guard. It was - How would you handle it if the mother of your 'brother' became interested in you. flirted, or made any other advance. I coudln't answer right away because I was suprised. She finally prodded and was like "would you be interested" me: 'oh heck no'. Hah.
Now they're calling my references. We'll see how this goes.
